What is the Smart UE1?

Referred as the “Inspection’s Swiss army knife” the Smart UE1 is a single-channel multi-method and multi-application inspection instrument originally designed for aerospace (manufacturing and MRO operations) but also suitable for Wind energy, Defense and Space.

It is a portable and light-weight tool that can replace up to 7 inspection instruments (including UT flaw detector, ET flaw detector, thickness gauge, resonance tester, clad detection and galvanometer).

It is a multi-method device supporting:

  • Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
  • Eddy Current (ET)
  • Resonance Testing

 Yes, the Smart UE1 acts as a digital continuity brick between acquisition and reporting. Features include:

  • Assisted reporting, avoiding dual entries and human errors.
  • Recording of signals triggered by time or position encoders for UT and ET.
  • Compatibility with most scanners, including Testia Smart Scan.

The device offers multiple connectivity options, including:

  • Bluetooth
  • Wi-Fi
  • 5G* (SIM card is not included)
  • LAN
  • USB-A 3.1, USB-C

The battery operational time is approximately 4 to 8 hours depending on the usage. A 2nd battery and a portable charger are included in the standard kit. The Hot Swap functionality allows you to switch batteries easily and quickly, without turning-off your device. 

What kind of inspections can I do with a Smart UE1 or a UE1 Box?

The Smart UE1 and UE1 box include 7 applications to perform the below inspections:

  • UT 
  • ET (+ rotary inspection)
  • Resonance
  • Thickness Gauge 
  • Thickness Gauge Direct 
  • Clad Tool
  • Galvanometer

The following accessories are required to use the Smart UE1 for clad detection:

  • Clad software module (TE-DEF-0830)
  • Cable BNC/Microdot (TE-DEF-0471)
  • Eddy Current pencil probe – 106P4 (TE-DEF-0289) 
  • Probe Holder 3/8″ID (TE-DEF-0300)
  • Reference plate made of cladded 2024T3 (NDTE-DEF-0119)
  • Only for Max and Neo version: Impedance adaptor 8,2µH – Blue (TE-ESM-CF03-B)

Note: the ET software module is not required for clad detection

In order to add the Thickness Gauge functionality to the Clad tool, you must purchase the Thickness Gauge Direct software module (TE-DEF-1484), as well as the proper transducer and cable, depending on your application:

  • Cable Lemo00/Microdot (TE-DEF-0771)
  • Adaptor Lemo00/BNC (TE-DEF-0732)

Note: the UT module is not required for the Thickness Gauge functionality

Clad Tool can be used to inspect AL2024 / 2524. Reference block AL2024 is included in the Clad Tool kit.

Note: AL7075 / AL6013 or other alloys cannot be inspected with a Clad Tool.

Is the Smart UE1 officially recognized for use in aerospace maintenance?

Yes, the Smart UE1 is referenced in 185 NTM procedures to maintain Airbus aircraft, demonstrating its reliability and confidence in the aerospace sector.

The Smart UE1 has been designed for different levels of expertise.

  • Non-NDT certified personnel can use the basic mode with assisted diagnosis such as the CladTool and the Thickness Gauge Direct.
  • NDT L1 to L3 can use the expert mode

Yes, Clad Tool is referenced in AITM-6002 and NTM 51-10-30.

Yes, the Thickness Gauge and Thickness Gauge Direct apps are compliant with AITM6-4016 for metallic parts and AITM6-4014 for composite parts.

Is there a trial period to test the applications?

Yes, when purchasing a Smart UE1, you get all the apps for a free trial during one month.
