What is the Smart UE1?
Referred as the “Inspection’s Swiss army knife” the Smart UE1 is a single-channel multi-method and multi-application inspection instrument originally designed for aerospace (manufacturing and MRO operations) but also suitable for Wind energy, Defense and Space.
It is a portable and light-weight tool that can replace up to 7 inspection instruments (including UT flaw detector, ET flaw detector, thickness measurement with A-scan representation or direct reading, resonance tester and clad detection).
What inspection methods does the Smart UE1 support?
It is a multi-method device supporting:
- Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
- Eddy Current (ET)
- Resonance Testing
Can I create inspection reports with a Smart UE1?
Yes, the Smart UE1 acts as a digital continuity brick between acquisition and reporting. Features include:
- Ability to generate C-scans (UT Module) through temporal or positional synchronization. The latter can be achieved using any type of external encoder, or via automated systems operating in full or partial immersion
- Export of acquired data (A-scans, C-scans) for post-processing (for example, via NDTkit UT).
- Generation of .csv files
- Compatibility with automated systems with 3-axis of freedom (such as the Smart Scan system developed by Testia) and collaborative robots (cobots) or 6-axis industrial robots.
What connectivity options are available on the Smart UE1?
The device offers multiple connectivity options, including:
- Bluetooth
- Wi-Fi
- 5G* (SIM card is not included)
- LAN
- USB-A 3.1, USB-C
What is the battery's operational time?
The battery operational time is approximately 4 to 8 hours depending on the usage. A 2nd battery and a portable charger are included in the standard kit. The Hot Swap functionality allows you to switch batteries easily and quickly, without turning-off your device.

What accessories are required for clad detection with the Smart UE1?
The following accessories are required to use the Smart UE1 for clad detection:
- Clad software module (TE-DEF-0830)

- Eddy Current pencil probe – PS002PS028-114N-C (TE-DEF-0289)
- Probe Holder 3/8″ID (TE-DEF-0300)
- Reference plate made of cladded 2024T3 (NDTE-DEF-0119)
- Only for Max and Neo version: Impedance adaptor 8,2µH – Blue (TE-ESM-CF03-B)
Note: certified personnel can also perform clad detection with the “ET” and “Galvanometer” apps available in the Smart UE1.
How to add the thickness measurement function to the Smart UE1?
In order to add the thickness measurement functionality to the Smart UE1, you have two possibilities:
- For certified personnel, you can purchase the “Thickness Gauge” software module (TE-DEF-0527)
- For non-certified personnel, you can purchase the “Thickness Gauge Direct” software module (TE-DEF-1484), as well as the two proper transducer (M202 et M208) with their respective delay lines (DLH-1 and DLH-3).
Note: the UT module is required to use the Thickness Gauge and the Thickness Gauge Direct apps.
What kind of materials can be inspected with Clad Tool and do you provide reference blocks?
Clad Tool can be used to inspect 2024 aluminum-clad panels. A specific reference block (NDTE-DEF-0119) is included in the Clad Tool kit.

Yes, the Smart UE1 is referenced in 185 NTM procedures to maintain Airbus aircraft, demonstrating its reliability and confidence in the aerospace sector.
What certification level do I need to use the Smart UE1?
The Smart UE1 has been designed for different levels of expertise.
- Non-NDT certified personnel can use the basic mode with assisted diagnosis such as the CladTool and the Thickness Gauge Direct after a dedicated internal training.
- NDT personnel from L1 to L3 can use all apps included in the Smart UE1.
Is Clad Tool referenced in AITMs and NTMs?
Yes, Clad Tool is referenced in AITM-6002 and NTM 51-10-30.
Is the Smart UE1 compliant with thickness measurement standards on metallic and CFRP?
Yes, the “Thickness Gauge” app is compliant with AITM6-4016 for metallic parts and AITM6-4014 for composite parts. The “Thickness Gauge Direct” is only compliant with AITM6-4016.
